What is the Job Ready Program?
The JRP gives international trade graduates the opportunity to demonstrate their skills and job readiness in an Australian workplace before applying for skilled migration.
Who is JRP for?
The JRP is particularly beneficial for individuals seeking a pathway to permanent residency in Australia who are unable to meet the general skilled migration requirements through standard skills assessments alone.
Trade Graduates
Designed for international students who completed Australian trade qualifications
Skills Assessment
A four-step employment-based program assessed by Trades Recognition Australia (TRA)
Workplace Based
Prove your competence through real paid employment in your nominated trade
PR Pathway
Successfully completing the JRP satisfies skills assessment requirements for skilled migration
How Does the Job Ready Program Work?
Each stage builds on the previous one. Complete all four to satisfy TRA's skills assessment for skilled migration.
Provisional Skills Assessment (PSA)
The first step is passing a Provisional Skills Assessment. This is a prerequisite for the JRP.
Key Requirements
- Confirms you studied in Australia and obtained a trade qualification
- Verifies an IELTS score of at least 6.0 in each band/section (or equivalent)
- Validates work experience or vocational placement in Australia within a 3-year validity period
- Most education providers ensure a vocational placement as part of the course
What Happens Next
Once you receive a positive PSA result, use it to apply for a Temporary Graduate Visa (subclass 485) and begin the next step.
Duration
Varies by application
Job Ready Employment (JRE)
The Job Ready Employment stage is useful for those who would like to apply for permanent migration to Australia. Find paid employment in your nominated trade and register it with TRA.
Key Requirements
- Find paid employment in your specific trade occupation and provide evidence of employment to TRA
- Many applicants choose to complete their employment in regional Australia, as there are more employment opportunities available
- Once TRA has verified the employment as suitable, begin 12 months of full-time work (38 hours/week) or equivalent part-time
- Employment must be with a TRA-approved employer
What Happens Next
After 6 months of verified employment, you become eligible for the Workplace Assessment (JRWA).
Duration
12 months full-time (1,575 hours)
Job Ready Workplace Assessment (JRWA)
Once you have completed 6 months of full-time employment or received an Employment Confirmation, you are eligible for the workplace assessment.
Key Requirements
- Assessment takes place at your actual workplace (e.g., a garage for mechanics)
- You must have completed at least 1 month of employment after registering your employer online
- The assessor evaluates whether you work at the required skill level for your job in Australia
- If unsuccessful, you can continue working and attempt another workplace assessment at a later date
What Happens Next
A successful JRWA result qualifies you for the final stage of the program.
Duration
Single assessment visit
Job Ready Final Assessment (JRFA)
The final assessment can only happen once you have achieved a successful JRWA result and completed a minimum of 12 months of full-time paid employment (or equivalent part-time employment).
Key Requirements
- Requires a successful JRWA result
- Must submit an Employment Confirmation Form (ECF) showing 12 months of full-time paid employment (or equivalent part-time) with a TRA-approved employer/s
- Submit proof: payslips, group certificates, statements of employment, and bank statements showing wages entering the account
- All employment must be completed within 3 years from your JRE start date
What Happens Next
Once all documents have been verified, you have satisfied the skills assessment required by the Department of Home Affairs (DOHA) and can apply for an independent skilled migration visa.
Duration
Document review period

What is the Job Ready Program?
The Job Ready Program (JRP) is a supervised employment program run by Trades Recognition Australia (TRA). It requires you to work in paid, trade-related employment in Australia and provide evidence of that work over a set period. Completing the JRP is often the critical step that determines whether you can apply for a skilled migration visa.
Who is eligible for the Job Ready Program?
To be eligible, you must: have studied for an occupation on the Medium to Long Term Strategic Skills List, confirm that TRA is the skills assessor for that profession, and be eligible to apply for the 485 Temporary Graduate Visa. The checklist also expects an Australian trade qualification (e.g. Certificate III, IV or Diploma from an RTO), a TRA-recognised occupation for JRP, and a positive Provisional Skills Assessment (PSA).
What are the stages of the Job Ready Program?
There are four stages. PSA checks your Australian trade qualification, IELTS 6 in each band, and work experience or vocational placement here within three years; a positive result supports a Temporary Graduate Visa and starting JRP. JRE is paid work in your occupation with evidence to TRA, then 12 months full time (38 hours per week) or equivalent part time with a TRA approved employer after TRA accepts the job. JRWA is the workplace assessment after 6 months full time or Employment Confirmation. JRFA needs a successful JRWA, an Employment Confirmation Form, proof such as payslips and bank statements, and 12 months of qualifying paid work within three years of your JRE start so you meet DOHA requirements for independent skilled migration.
What employment and documentation does the Job Ready Program require?
You need paid employment in your occupation for at least 12 months full time with a minimum of 1,575 hours, and payslips, employment records, and work logs. Your visa must allow paid work and last long enough for the 12 month employment requirement. For JRWA you need at least one month of employment after you register your employer online. Keep records of work experience, training, and feedback for final TRA review at JRFA.
